There are five cardiac surgeons: Mr Richens, Mr Mitchell, Mr Lu and Mr Naik and Mr Jutley. Cardiac lists start at 8:00 with a team briefing in the staff room. Trainees are expected to see patients before the lists but not to prescribe any premeds unless specifically asked to do so.

We have two state-of-the-art theatres (each with 3D echo), eight ICU beds and six HDU beds. Our capacity is 800-900 cases per year. Elective operating takes place five days a week. The caseload is varied but the majority of patients are undergoing first time elective coronary artery bypass grafting, however the proportion of valve procedures exceeds the national average. The resident junior staff are surgical trainees and nurse practitioners and clinical management is shared between consultant anaesthetic and surgical staff. The on-call anaesthetists provide emergency airway cover.

Teaching opportunities will present in theatre and CICU. Spend some time with the perfusionists and try to attend the ICU meeting Wednesday morning 8:05 in the library, echocardiography meeting Thursday lunchtime and angiography meeting Friday lunchtime in the seminar room.

We hope you enjoy your cardiac module. Contact us if you have any questions or difficulties.
