Teaching Programme

A subgroup of the NEMSA School Board, with representation from all the hospitals, has been considering the best way to organise the NEMSA teaching programmes.  The objectives are:

To meet the varied educational needs of different trainee groups in an efficient way

To improve trainee access to their educational programmes particularly in the context of altered shift patterns

To provide clarity in allowances for both trainees and their departments

To provide more flexibility to the departments for their service needs

To this end, it has been decided to re-organise the way teaching is delivered.  NEMSA will no longer be producing a “Friday afternoon teaching programme”.  This will be replaced by 10 whole teaching days each academic year, aimed at specific training levels, to be accessed by trainees across the School.

Identified training levels:

Basic trainees (includes all ACCS) - CT1 and CT2 and ST2—Click here for 09-10 details

Intermediate trainees—ST3 and ST4—Click here for 09-10 details

                 Higher Trainees—ST5, 6 and 7 and all SpRs—Click here for 09-10 details

Trainees will also be:

Entitled to external study leave (10 days a year for basic and intermediate trainees and 14 days for higher trainees)

Expected to attend local departmental teaching (20 half days a year for basic and intermediate trainees and 16 half days a year for higher trainees)

Full arrangements for each training level are set out in the above documents, but as a principle, individual trainees are expected to check that they have been released for teaching on the relevant day.

External study leave will continue to require approval from the local Rota Consultant and College Tutor.

Some of the examination teaching is in addition to the “School” allowance set out above.  This is discretionary and it is up to the local College Tutor and Rota Consultant to agree the conditions under which trainees are released from duties to attend this teaching.

Trainees are expected to keep an accurate diary of attendance at all educational activity, which will be inspected at ARCP and RITA assessments.  NEMSA is considering the introduction of a School study leave “passport” for each trainee, which will allow absolute clarity as to how much leave has been approved.

The coordinator for these new arrangements is Dr Adam Carney, who will be reporting directly to the NEMSA School Board.
